Joshua Klaus

Joshua Klaus is an experiential educator with decades spent teaching and learning in formal, informal, and field-based settings in the US and Latin America. After getting his start with Teach for America in the Oakland Public Schools as an elementary school teacher, he spent a decade leading field science courses for high school students in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico. Recently, he’s helped build a high school that’s part of a PK-12 independent school in Bend, Oregon, and now he’s transitioning into a career in counseling and holistic wellness.

Josh holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies and Spanish from Willamette University, an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana, and is slow-walking toward a M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Oregon State University. When he’s not working on ways to make schools better meet the needs of students, you can find him playing in the dirt with his five-year-old daughter, surfing with friends in Mexico, playing bass in a rock band, or just hanging out with his wife, taking in the wonders of their small, messy house.

SEL matters because it helps us understand our hearts, minds, and bodies, all of which are essential to forming relationships and embracing all that life can offer.

Life, for me, is about seeking out depth and meaning in as many aspects of life as possible. Understanding myself and my emotions is an important step in connecting with others, knowing that our relationships provide us with endless avenues to makes sense of our world.
